Beer, Wilhelm

   German astronomer. Born in Berlin, his brother, Giacomo Meyerbeer, became a composer. At the age of 16 he volunteered for the military and served in the campaigns of 1813 and 1815 against Napoleon. Later he joined his father's banking house, succeeding him in 1826. Beer pursued astronomy as a hobby and built a private observatory in the garden of his villa. Together with Johann Heinrich von Müdler, he observed Mars and they published their results. From 1834 to 1836 they compiled a map of the moon.
